For most web hosts you can expect they’ll provide these 3 services:
- Domain Name Registration
- Web Hosting Your WordPress Site
It is recommended that you keep all 3 of these services with one company for the sake of your sanity.
Most web hosting companies also provide supplemental services such as:
- Site backups
- SSL (most do now for free)
- WP updates
It will depend upon the host and the plan you have chosen.
Another consideration is support. The standard is 24 X 7 X 365 support via telephone, email and text.
There are many hosts to choose from. What they provide and how they do it can be very different.
If you’re thinking of changing hosting companies most will help migrate your site to their platform.

I’ve been asked on more than one occasion, “What does a typical web hosting company provide?” Here are some of the names of companies that you may or may not be familiar with. There are hundreds if not thousands of companies that provide WordPress hosting, and though on the surface, they all seem the same, they’re not. Some of these companies provide the services in very different ways, their technologies are very different, and so you need to explore different options before making a choice because your choice of a web host is going to affect your website’s performance, security, and other matters. So, do make a good choice. In general, these companies provide three services. Now, they don’t all provide these three services, but the general rule of thumb is that they do provide domain name registration so you can register your domain and pay for your domain within your web hosting account. You don’t buy a domain, you license it, and generally speaking the licenses are for a year or longer, and the .coms are a little more expensive than most, these days. You can also set up your email accounts with your web hosting company. So if you want to use your domain for your email, and if it’s a business site I highly recommend that you do, then this is the place that you can do that. So web hosts, most anyway, do provide email service. Of course, the third is what we always think about when we think of web hosting, is actual web hosting. That is the home of your WordPress website.
That consists of two different components. One are the files that make up any WordPress website, and this includes things like WordPress itself, images, style files, anything that deals with files. It will be located on the web host’s server and the database. Every WordPress web site has a database where information is stored so that it can be retrieved on demand, now all web hosts generally provide additional services, which means you can install WordPress sometimes with one click. They say, “Installation.” They’ll also provide SSL service so that you can have HTTPS, and generally, there’s no charge for that unless you need a more sophisticated type of SSL. They may provide backups for your website on a periodic basis, and they will also update your WordPress installation depending on the nature of that WordPress update. Some will provide what’s called a CDN and or content delivery network. Other things that they do is they’ll provide FTP access so that you can access your files directly, and something called PHP admin, if you need to access and do something with your database. Now, here’s my takeaway. When it comes to choosing a web host, here’s what you’re going to find. There are no deals. You can’t expect to get premium service and the best of everything if you’re going to choose a more economical web hosting plan for a tight budget.
