The C-Panel is where you’ll go to get things done when you login to your web host account.
Some C-Panels can be be overwhelming with many options. Others are less so but they all serve the same purpose.
It’s where you’ll g to:
- Register domain names
- Set up email accounts
- Install and manage some aspects of your WordPress site
- Set up and access data[asses
- Set up FTP (or SFTP) accounts
- Install SSL
and much more.

What you are looking at is my C-panel from my Bluehost account, and I’m going to give you a tour of what’s here. It sure looks confusing, and there is a lot going on. If you have a Bluehost account, this will probably look pretty typical or familiar with you. It might not because some users of Bluehost have a different user interface, and if you don’t even have a Bluehost account that’s certainly fine. Let’s say you’re using GoDaddy or SiteGround, or any number of other web hosting services that use the C-panel concept, this will look familiar and be very similar. I want to take you through some of the highlights, and we’re not going to go through every one of these because that would be crazy. I don’t use every one of these different services that they have, and the important links are up at the top. I’m not sure, but let’s start with this. “Domains,” here I can manage all the domains that are associated with my Bluehost account, and I’m going to take us down to right over here. I happen to have all of these, and there’s about 11 of them now. Different domains that are associated or connected to my Bluehost account, and my primary one is JoyofCode.com, and all these others are additional add-ons. Of course, I have to pay a fee for each domain, but I don’t have to pay an additional fee to install WordPress using my Bluehost account.
So, that’s nice. Then you have all these other links here about how to transfer domains, manage domains, all that kind of stuff. If you need to see if a domain exists or you want to license a new domain, you would start over here, and that’s about all I need for now. Now I’m going to go back to that page where we are on and let’s work our way through the important stuff over here. You have email, and right over here, “Email manager.” Here’s where you can set up your email accounts, and it’s pretty simple. You can see I have each one of these as a different email address, and I’m going to scroll down over here– No, I’m not going to do it that way. I’m going to create a new email address like this. So, I would put in whatever name I want. It doesn’t matter. Then I would find the domain that I want to associate with that name, and then of course here’s what’s important, always keep this information available. I want to have the username and password for that email address. Now, this is going to be different than your WordPress log in, and this is going to be different for your web hosting log in. This applies to your email log in. So, keep this separate, keep this available, so you’ll always know where it is. You choose your password and then, of course, you’re going to verify your password, and it’s highly recommended that you use a what’s called a “Strong password.” By this I mean, let’s have a look over here. Something that’s like this. Do keep that information available because you can’t come back to any web host and look at the email manager to see what the password is, you’d have to reset it. All right. Then down here, I always check unlimited because I don’t want to limit how many or how much email can be stored in the email server with Bluehost. I would do that, and then I would click “Create,” and I’d have another brand new email address. Once I have that I can go over here and I can manage the email. I could look at the inbox, and you can see these different functions. But here’s what’s important, I’m going to go back to where I was, let’s go back here and if I want to check my email– The chances are you’re going to have your own email application, whether it’s Apple Mail, Outlook, even Gmail. It doesn’t matter. These are all applications, whether they’re desktop applications or online applications, that will let you access your email. The important thing you’re going to need to know of course is, what is your email username and what is your email password? Just by doing this, I could login and find any one of my email accounts and see what’s going on. Now I don’t use the Bluehost email program because I happen to use Apple Mail, that’s my preference. If I wanted to access my email, I could even go right over here. I could type in– This looks familiar because I could type in a URL, webmail.bluehost.com and come to this page and access my email. In other words, I don’t even have to log into my Bluehost account. I can log directly into my email. By the way, if you’re not using Bluehost and there’s no reason why you have to that’s for sure, you could use GoDaddy. GoDaddy has a very similar thing where you can type in webmail.godaddy.com and also get to a page that looks like this, and you can log in.
Let me show you what I mean. You see, same idea. So you would sign in over here with your username and password for your email, and you’d have access to it. The other little thing about email that’s interesting is that if you need to set up an auto-responder, let’s say typically like a going away message or “I’m away” message. I would go right over here, create the auto-responder, fill in this information over here– I’m not sure what “Interval” is, but the email address that this would apply to and the name of the sender, that is your name. The subject, “I’m away.” Write your little message, “I’m on vacation if you need any assistance, contact Heather.” Then how long you want to run the auto-responder. Typically you’ll have it like a start and end date, and then you click on “Submit,” and you’ll have an auto-responder. It’s pretty simple to set that up. Again, this is whether you’re using Bluehost or any typical web hosting company. Now in addition to email service, and by the way you can always click these little– If you don’t use something you could click it away. We’ll leave this one open. “Domains,” see the same kind of thing over you if you want to manage your domains, register domains, so forth. It’s all there.
I’m just going to get this out of the way over here. Files, if you want to set up an FTP account, file transfer protocol account so that you can move files from your computer to the web hosting server, or you want to move files from the web hosting server to your computer you’re going to need to do that. You would go about filling– I’m not going to take you through all this, but you would go about filling this all out, and you could have an FTP account. Let me click over here, and you’ll see some of my FTP accounts. They look a little like email accounts, actually, as you’ll see in a second. Here’s where you would go to set up an FTP account, much simpler. Then you would fill this information out and down over here, and these are all the user names for all of my different FTP accounts. Again, you need to know in order to use FTP you need to know the name of the FTP server, and you need to have a username and password so that you can have access to your files in your web hosting account. In addition to files, there’s other services too, but the other one that’s of interest mostly to me and other people who use WordPress all the time is something called phpMyAdmin, and I’m going to click on that. We’ll see– Let’s see what we’ll see. This is again, and it’s typical of all web hosting services. These are all the databases and my account, and each database corresponds to a website. Now some of the websites are no longer there, but the database remains, which is kind of interesting. So even if I’ve deleted a website the important stuff, the database is still in my account. I could still have access to it, and that’s all I need to show you at this point. If you need to create a database to get started, you go over here and click on “Database.” Again, I’m not going to take you through this whole process here, but here is where you would go. See, when you log in to create a new database and to add user, password, permissions, all that stuff that you need for a database. All these things that I just showed you, domain name registration, email, files, database, all of those things– Managing all those things is very typical of the services that most web hosts offer to their customers.
