It’s getting hard to write anything new these days. The truism that “there’s nothing new under the sun” is as true as it has ever been. Maybe it’s just me coming to terms with reality.
Let’s not despair. It is the start of a new year and hope springs eternal. See what I mean. It is hard to write something that has not already been written.
If you write for a specific niche – as most do – like I do for WordPress businesses – you know what I am talking abut.
But Hold On. There Are Ways To Create New Material.
This is where AI comes in but in ways you might not have thought of. Here’s the key: do things that AI cannot do (at least for now).
1. Write about something that is new.
Systems like ChatGPT have not indexed content since 2022.
In writing an article exploring the features of the WordPress theme TwentyTwentyFour here’s what the Chatster had to say:
“As of my last update in January 2022, I’m not aware of a specific WordPress theme named ‘TwentyTwentyFour…’ The ‘Twenty Twenty-Four’ name doesn’t align with the patterns I’m familiar with.”
Ah, that’s your entre!
Of course after my article is published it will be indexed one day and become just more data for the AI maw. But let’s not go down that path for now.
2. Write with personality.
This is not as easy as you’d think. I write the way I talk. Pekoe say that they can hear me when they read something I’ve written.
Take some chances. If you’re funny, write something funny. How will you know it’s funny? Try it out with live humans and see what the reaction is. Lots of times I will say something that is funny which will end up on a screen.
I suppose the most important thing is the obvious. Be yourself and if you’re not a bot that should be evident in your style.
3. Create screencast videos.
One thing AI can’t do now and probably won’t for some time is make any kind of video especially those you see to help you learn something. Considering all that goes into a production makes it’s a safe bet that this content types is something you can do for some tine to come.
Use AI For What It Can Do
Does this mean I shy away from ChatGPT and other AI tools? I’d be crazy if I did.
AI is my writing assistant. It has helped me to develop ideas, researching or improving content. While I think of it as a Google compiler, I know it’s more than that. I know people use it for inspiration when they draw a blank on the screen but that has never been my problem.
I have used it to generate code for a WordPress plugin. That’s right, in case you didn’t know, AI can write computer code. (Whether it’s any good is open for discussion).
These are a few ways to protect yourself and career as a content developer while using AI so that you still have the upper hand. Do things that AI can’t for now to future proof yourself best as you can.
